Magic Tricks With Coins
Invisible coin tricks are a great, easy way to entertain kids at a party. To make a coin disappear, hold any small coin on the right fingertips. Bend your left arm, putting the hand near the left ear. Place the coin on the left elbow, cover it with the right fingers, and rub it with a circular motion.

“Did you know that if you rub a coin against your elbow like this, it becomes smaller and smaller?” As you say this, lift your fingers slightly and allow the coin to drop to the floor as though accidentally.

“It’ll never work if I do that.” Bend down and pick up the coin with the fingers of the left hand. Pretend to transfer the coin from the left to the right hand, but actually retain it in the left fingers. You simply place the left fingers on the right palm, close the right hand, and return immediately to your original position, left hand near the ear, right hand on the elbow. Don’t feel guilty about this action and don’t do it too fast; that will only create suspicion. Just do it naturally.

Continue rubbing the right fingers against the elbow. Meanwhile, the left fingers secretly push the coin into your left ear. “This rubbing gradually wears the coin away until it becomes very thin.”

Pretend to take the now invisible coin from the elbow and place it on the left palm. “This is probably the thinnest coin you ever saw!” Both hands at this point are seen to be empty.

Pick up the phantom coin. “With a really thin coin like this I can do a remarkable thing. If I push it into my right ear like this, it passes right through my head - there isn’t anything much there to stop it - and comes out of my left ear.”

Reach into your left ear and bring out the coin, which has become visible again.

A variation: Instead of leaving the coin in your ear, push it into your collar, thus accomplishing a complete vanish. Finish by showing that the coin has been rubbed into invisibility and then give it to someone as a souvenir. “Don’t try to spend it for candy. They’ll give you invisible candy, and that - you can’t even taste.”

To make a coin vanish you can also place a penny on the back of the left fist. Cover it with the right fingers, begin to rub it against the fist, and then, accidentally let it fall to the floor. As you go to get it, put your left foot beside it. Bend down and pick up the coin with your right hand. As you straighten up, let your hand pass close to your right ankle, and allow the coin to slide off the fingers into your trouser cuff.

Don’t push it in; just drop it without pausing as your hand goes past. The spectators won’t see this. If an action seems important they watch it carefully. But here they believe the coin was dropped accidentally, so they pay little attention to the way it is picked up.

Place the fingers on the back of the fist again and continue rubbing. “If I do this just right, the coin will pass through my hand.” After a moment lift the fingers slowly, showing that the coin has gone. Then turn the left hand over, open it, and find nothing. “I must have rubbed it a little too hard. I lose a lot of money that way.”

Magic tricks are one of the best ways to impress families and friends. After all, who doesn’t love magicians and their wizardry? Magic tricks are illusions conducted as part of a performing art to amuse and entertain audiences. These may seem to be supernatural feats or impossible occurrences although these are achieved by natural means. Magic tricks are one of the best ways to enjoy your leisure period. If you are an expert in performing magic tricks, you can make entertainment for many people at a time.

Magic is always fun and with some practice, you will soon learn a number of magic tricks with invisible thread, perfect for entertaining family and friends. Magic can be a lifesaver in these situations. Magic tricks have been a popular form of entertainment for many years. Originally people who practised illusions and slight of hands were thought to be powerful wizards and witches but the many recent exposes have rectified this.

Talking while doing magic tricks should not be strained or sounds fake, instead, it should be confident and completely comfortable. Any conversation about card tricks can be scripted in advance, which directly benefits those who may stutter or struggle to get words out in company. Instead of acting like you know the mysterious trick behind all of your math tricks, a fun strategy to start off your tricks is to fumble with the trick and act surprised by the results. A funny act might be to invent a story and inform your audience of a certain outcome, while instead their original cards keep showing up. Instead, the object is to convey the impression that the performer is gifted with an inexplicable power.

Card tricks are among some of the most popular and infamous illusions used by magicians. With the illusion magicians use a great deal of showy techniques as so much of the art is in the dramatic presentation; card trick magicians must learn to master the skill using a deck of cards. Card tricks are the most common tricks done by those who do tricks at parties or to entertain friends. Not only are they great fun, they are easier than they look. Card tricks are always very effective. Everyone is familiar with the ‘pick any card from the deck’ kind of trick.

Magicians claim that a coin can melt, but can a coin melt that easily? There are no such things as coins that melts when a cigarette is pushed through it – but people still believe what their eyes tell them they’ve seen. Magicians continue to evolve better methods for their effects, utilising the advantages offered by improvements in technology - they have been able to perform things that would have been considered impossible. Magicians today seldom resort to hiding things up their sleeves, which has become a cliche, although this technique can still be used on occasion.

Magicians, who sometimes use fancy costumes, music, and other gimmicks, show that they can make solid rings appear to link and unlink many times. Some people will use money to perform a magic trick, such as switching a $1 bill with a $100 bill, and making ripped dollars become whole again. Magicians refer to their “story” as patter. Patter is the words used in the presentation of the magic trick. Magicians have always been for entertainment, whereas witch doctors and medicine men may have used some of the same techniques but for other purposes. The first recorded Magicians date all the way back to Egyptian times.

When hiring a magician for a birthday party or corporate event, you will want an entertainer who offers a fun show and makes your event memorable. However, there are many so-called illusionists who haven’t taken the time to perfect their art form.

If you want your audience to be transported to a magical world, you must choose a performer wisely. In this article, we’ll uncover the tricks of the magic trade to help you spend your money wisely.

A good place to start your search, with regard to hiring a magician for your function, is with references from trusted friends and family. As well, don’t be afraid to hold auditions. Anyone can call themselves a magician, so be sure you know exactly what a performance will encompass before you sign a contract.

Most trustworthy professionals nowadays have a web site that offers a biography and a detailed description of their show. The top professionals feature videos on their web pages that let you see the types of routines that they perform and their presentation and interaction with audiences. Comparing videos is an excellent way to evaluate a performer and decide if they are right for your event.

Magicians perform two types of magic shows: stand-up/stage and close-up/strolling. In a stand-up/stage performance, he puts on a show that’s appropriate for small to large audiences that can include birthday parties and school functions.

In close-up/strolling performances, he walks around at an event and performs “close-up” tricks using cards, coins and other objects. Strolling magic works well at open houses, cocktail parties and company picnics. A professional magician usually will customize a show for a particular audience to ensure a great performance.

The Yellow Pages is a good resource to find a magician for hire but be wary of party planners and bookers. Many have clients who perform as magicians on a part time basis and the agent may not be clear on what their act entails. On the other hand, a high-end booker will evaluate your needs and match you with a magician that best suits your audience. Even then, insist on references and a video or live demonstration.

Hiring a magician for a kids’ party doesn’t have to be all smoke and mirrors. Do your research carefully and know what to expect. A performer dressed as a clown who also offers games probably isn’t the right choice if you’re hoping for sophisticated magic tricks. The same applies to other entertainers who dress up in costumes.

There are some accomplished magicians who dress as wizards and sorcerers but still check their credentials. After all, you want the party to be something your child will always remember as a magical experience.

If you have entertainer’s blood running in your veins and you know you have to get in front of people and perform, it is very important to get work and find places to perform to satisfy this inner urge.  Many times it can happen that a skillful and gifted performer has no work.  This is sad but true especially now-a days when times are economically difficult.  Performing in front of other people is not for everybody, and for those who have it inside their system, it is very important to find ways and means to express their gifts. It’s pretty easy to find places to work for free – especially if you are a standup comedian – there are many clubs and bars available, but it’s not the same with magic and other performing arts.

I remember starting out in the early 90s by doing magic.  At those times there was a serious depression in Finland, which is the country where I live, and I had just run out of work.  I didn’t know what to do, but as a kid I had been very interested in magic and practiced it a lot, and done several performances.  So I was at a point where I didn’t know what to do, but my magical interests were buzzing underneath the surface.  I started to practice with the cards and coins, and read some books I had in my bookshelf.  There was nothing forced in this, it was a very natural interest towards magic.  Very soon I also started to use all my spare money to buy new books and accessories from magic stores. I was mainly interested in close up magic, but I also knew I had to build sooner or later a solid stand up act.

I’m telling you this, because this is how my career started, and I feel it might help somebody out there.  The next thing I did was to show these tricks that I had nearly learned to my friends.  I was a bit amazed to see the great reactions I got from them.  Actually the reactions were bigger than I thought possible!  It wasn’t so much about me, because I really wasn’t a very skillful performer at that time, but I experienced the power that magic has over people.

Very soon I realized that I could go around in restaurants and other places where there are lots of people and perform my magic and make money.  And that is exactly what I did!  I made a list of restaurants nearby and on Mondays and Tuesdays I contacted their owners and went to demo my tricks for them.  Almost every time the restaurant owners were delighted about what they saw and wanted to book me! I told him that I was available and we made a deal almost immediately.  My fee was also very reasonable in the beginning, so I had no trouble in booking gigs for myself.  Very soon I had a 20 or 30 restaurants in my neighborhood and counting, where I could go on a gig by just calling the owner and arranging appropriate time. I was doing only close up magic, I didn’t have a stand up act back then.

Very soon I met hotel owners and other private corporate people on my gigs, and when they saw me do my magic they wanted to get my calling card and book me.  In the beginning I had to do lots of field work to get my business running, but after few years people started to call me and I didn’t have to run after clients anymore. This was the time when business started to function on auto pilot. Very soon I got requests to perform for children and do other kinds of stand up performances, so it was time to start to build a solid stand up act as well, but my close up work was the starting point to my career.

I want to encourage you if you feel performing for live audience is something you want to do, to go out and find work for yourself.  In the beginning it doesn’t pay well, but once you establish yourself the fees get bigger and more reasonable.  Don’t be afraid to take action and it is also very important for your soul as a performer to make it happen.

Elaborate stunts and illusions. Beautiful assistants. A crew of well trained exotic animals. You are intrigued by the magician’s life and have decided to give it a shot. Well, don’t be fooled by the magicians you see on T.V. There is more to the profession than that, and you need to learn it from all different perspectives in order to be a true success.

In addition to stunts and illusions, you need to understand the basics. Palming techniques. Small tricks. Not all of your shows will require you to use your big tricks. A true magician knows a combination of both, and knows them all well.

Here is what you need to know to become a magician.

Learn the Basics. Learning the basic techniques is very important. Simple card tricks, coin tricks, and small tricks with props like ropes and hats are good to learn. You can learn from a book, take a class, or learn from a DVD or instruction online. The methods you choose will depend largely on your learning style. Keep in mind that it can be very helpful to have an expert show you how to do it and critique your technique.

Get a Mentor. In your road to becoming a magician, getting a mentor can be a tremendous help. A mentor will not only teach you how to perform tricks and illusions, but will also assist you on the business side of being a magician. Most are self employed and are responsible for booking their own engagements. It can be a big help to also learn things such as marketing, etc from your mentor.

Go to School. Yes, there are magic schools. Some are part of clown school. Others are designed as enrichment programs in middle school and high schools. Attending a school that focuses completely on magic can help you learn quickly and put you on a schedule for success.

What Kind of Magician? What kind of magician do you want to be? Each successful magician out there has some kind of niche. Do you want to be a clown/magician? Would you like to do elaborate stunts? Or maybe you want to focus entirely on card tricks. It’s up to you. Once you define exactly how you envision your future career, you can take the steps necessary to achieve it.

Your Tricks. Each performing magician has not only a broad knowledge of their field, they also have a select amount of tricks that they master. Granted, depending on the performance, you will want to vary your lineup. However, if you have a few tricks you can depend on, it will make your job a lot easier.

Stage presence. Being a technical magician won’t get you far. You need to develop a stage presence. Each trick and illusion you learn needs to have a routine attached to it that will captivate the audience. You can be a mediocre magician and still entertain the crowd with your jokes and anecdotes. What truly matters is that your audience has a good time.

My advice is, if you don’t already do SOME kind of sponge magic you are NUTS! Almost nothing is stronger than when people open their hand and those extra sponges appear. It always takes them “right back to wonder.”

I worked with classic red balls for years, but I got sick and tired of playing hide and seek with them when they rolled off the table. I also got sick of the clown nose comments. This is why I further developed sponge magic.

I have spent many years developing material (plenty of classic sleights and several different routines) but the handling I do most often is a quick “Miser Dream.” I slip my hands into my back pockets, grab the jumbo earplug in the left hand and one of the small earplugs into my right. Then I quickly pretend to “find” several earplugs on other people’s elbows, ears, etc- and each time I pretend to put in into my left hand, but of course just hold out the same one earplug in my right.

To finish, I produce the earplug from my own ear (or wherever) and jam “everything” that is in my left hand into a spectator’s hand. I just tap the back of their hand with the one small earplug and just stand back and SAY NOTHING - the longer they wait, the more tension builds and when they open their hand - BOOM. Talk about feeling like a REAL magician!

This is also a great trick for serious hecklers. They make some dumb comment and I say something back. And then when they make another dumb comment (which they almost always do) I just say, “I don’t think you’re listening,” and I pretend to spot something in their ear. Finally, I just say “Ohhhh, that explains it!” and pretend to pull the jumbo earplug out of their ear. Without saying a word I’ve been able to make the heckler the butt of a great magic sight gag, with all his friends busting a gut. It’s clear sailing for the rest of the show!

There are other great magicians who have created effects with stuff OTHER than sponges. “Lazarus” is a wonderful bar effect where the classic “do as I” routine is performed with matches.

“Re:Cap” is a very fresh transposition between a borrowed coin and the CAP of a salt shaker standing at the end of a table. Magicians constantly floor folks with this stunning opener for years.

There are a lot of different things magicians can do with sponges. Look around for a sponge magic trick to work into your routine. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the reactions you get from your audience.

Magic Tricks With Coins
A magic trick is made up of more than one component. First is the element of the expectations of the audience. If they are told they will see magic, it will help them to believe that anything out of the ordinary is magic, or at least an illusion. Expectations may not be that they will see something magic; it may simply be that they expect to be entertained. Particularly in the high budget stage shows, the entertainer has a reputation which will lead to certain expectations by the audience.

If you hear on previews that the Statue of Liberty will be made to disappear, you have some expectation that at least the Statue of Liberty will seem to disappear, simply because David Copperfield has a reputation for making things disappear in full view of live audiences plus millions on television. So, you begin watching the show believing you will see a disappearance.

Next, the magician performs several preliminary feats successfully. These will be at a level above card tricks, but may rely as much on how the trick is presented as the actual trick. The secret may be in a new twist on a familiar trick, or it may be music, lighting stage sets, or even dance routines. The point is that the magician must make the material appear fresh and new in some way.

By successfully completing the lead-in tricks, the magician is building toward the climax presentation. Undoubtedly the “studio audience” in a major magic stage show such as the Statue of Liberty disappearance did not see the same things as did the television audience. We know that the Statue of Liberty did NOT disappear one day from the New York Harbor and reappear a few minutes later. However, the television audience wasn’t disappointed because the illusion was there and has led to many heated discussions on blogs and in bars not about what happened, but about HOW he made it disappear.

Even though we know intellectually that something could not have occurred, we don’t argue that it actually occurred, we argue about how it occurred.

So, the point is that we don’t really want a magic trick revealed; we’d rather have our illusions.

On the other hand, the illusion represents a bit of a puzzle which is a challenge to the brain. It’s fun to try to determine how a trick might have been constructed. This also represents a challenge to a magician who is tasked with either finding new ways to do old tricks, or developing truly new routines. Many of the magic shop kits and items seem like cheating in a way. Coins with trap doors, invisible breaks in seemingly solid rings or hoops seem as if it’s no longer illusion. If you learn on the internet you can purchase a coin which has a trap door so that a cigarette can be passed “through” the coin; you will forever after be suspicious of any similar tricks.

It would seem that this is a lazy magician’s tool. Once you’ve learned how the classic levitation sequence is done, you will be spoiled for the illusion, and will be looking for the props. If the routine is done using a unique approach, you may still be able to enjoy, even knowing how it’s done, because you recognize the performance as entertainment rather than magic.
