Magic Tricks With Coins

In order to become a great magician, someone must get a few things down and stick to them if they want to be successful for sure. It is very important that you make sure you practice your tricks in front of a mirror so you can see the trick the exact same way that the audience would.

Another thing you also have to do, is to practice a lot. There is no such thing as too much practice you would never want your magic trick to go wrong. There is a saying and it is practice the “patter” as well as the trick.

It is a very good idea to figure out before hand what you want you will say during your shows instead of just rambling on about random things that don‘t make sense. Good patter will help distract the audience just enough to keep them from guessing how you’ve pulled off your magical tricks even if you are doing it right before their eyes.

Now it doesn’t matter how much people beg and plead to find out how you did your magic trick. Always resist the temptation to tell how the trick worked, always keep them guessing and they will be even more impressed with your show. The less people that know how to do your trick, the better it is for you.

Never do the same trick more than once for the same audience. It makes it too easy for the audience to guess how it was done and also if you do the same trick over and over again people will get bored of your show and tell their friends that it’s no longer entertaining.

Wherever you can, borrow the objects from the audience… coins, pencils, napkins, etc. Borrowing from the audience makes it seem like the magician has not had time to do anything sneaky to the item they are using for the trick. This makes everything seem more magical not only that but it’s always great to have the audience involved.

A child’s imagination and the art of a magic trick are a wonderful combination. A child’s imagination is a wonderful enhancement to any magic trick. It’s that unique and innocent perception of the world that kids have that make performing magic tricks for them all the more rewarding.

Even something as simple as the disappearing coin trick will have kids giggling with joy as you first make the coin disappear then reappear from one of the children’s ears. They’ll love and beg you to do even more with them! And if you can’t get hooked on the innocent reaction of children then you can’t get hooked at all.

The best part about performing magic tricks for kids is that kids just know how to be kids… after all that’s exactly what they are. And magic to kids is just that… magic. I mean… after all… what is the major draw to Disney World for kids… well… Magic Kingdom… of course!

Coin tricks are one of the most respected and entertaining forms of magic. So if you want to perform professional looking coin tricks it’s vital to develop the ability to palm objects.

Palming is a technique that allows you to hold or conceal an object in your hand. As the name suggests it involves hiding the object (for example, a coin) in the palm of your hand, although other versions of palming involve the use of your fingers or thumb.

When done skillfully, you should be able to palm a coin while conveying the impression that your hand is empty. Top magicians continue the illusion by maintaining unnatural hand positions with both hands so that the hand used to palm the object in question looks less noticeable.

There are three main palming techniques that can be used to conceal coins.

1) The Classic Palm: This is the most common method and involves holding a coin between the muscle at the base of the thumb and the fleshy part on the edge of the hand. The coin is kept in place using a small amount of lateral pressure. Ideally, you should use just enough pressure to keep the coin in place when your palm is facing down. Any more pressure will make your hand look unnatural and defeat the purpose of the palming technique. With practice you’ll soon know the right amount of pressure to use.

When practising this technique there’s a natural tendency to hold your thumb further away from your fingers in order to increase the amount of grip that you can apply to the hidden object. If possible, try to resist this temptation as it can give people a clue that your hand isn’t as empty as you might like them to believe.

Try practising in front of a mirror until you can use the classic palm technique to hide coins of all shapes and weights in a natrual manner.

And when you start practising, it’s a good idea to use the largest, yet lightest coin that you can find. For example, the American half dollar is a perfect size for practising and the fact that is has a strongly milled edge provides more grip. In contrast, smaller and heavier objects take more skill to palm naturally.

2) The Finger Palm: This is a slightly easier way to conceal a coin. From being displayed at the end of all five fingertips, the coin is released and slips down inside the hand to the crease in the skin where your fingers meet the palm of your hand. This allows you to hold the coin securely using a natural looking hand position. It also has the benefit that your hand can be viewed from a wide range of angles without revealing the coin.

Often magicians reinforce this technique by combining it with misdirection or picking up another object. This further reinforces the idea that their hand is empty.

3) The Back Palm: This method of palming is used to conceal a coin behind your hand, while showing your audience that the palm of your hand is empty. It’s also the technique that magicians use when they pretend to pluck a coin out of the air or from behind a person’s ear. In most cases the coin is gripped between the pinkey and the finger next to it. The other fingers and the thumb are then used to conceal the coin.

Here are three simple coin tricks to add to your collection of magic. They don’t take long to learn, they don’t need many special props and with a bit of practice they can amuse and delight people wherever you go.

Coin Trick 1: Money Making Magic

Your hands are empty and there are three coins on the table. You sweep the coins off the edge of the table and into your hand. When you open your hand, there are five coins instead of three.

The Secret: Before you begin, stick two coins to the underside of the table at the edge where you plan to do the trick. When you sweep the coins off the table with your right hand, detach the other two coins with your left hand. When you open your left hand, the three coins will have magically increased to five.

Coin Trick 2: The Teleporting Coin

A coin mysteriously travels from one hand to the other. Start with your palms face up on the table and a coin in the palm of each hand. Flip both hands over and when you remove one hand there’s nothing under it. When you remove your other hand, both coins are safely hidden under it.

The Secret: Place one coin in the palm of your left hand and another coin at the base of your fingers towards the right hand side of your right hand. Due to the positioning of the coins, when you flip your hands over the left coin will end up under your left hand, while the right coin will be pushed towards your left hand.

The trick should work automatically. If you flip your hands using enough speed, your audience won’t be able to see what happens.

Practice flipping your hands until you can get the trick right every time. The hand that fires the coin across should flip slightly before your other hand. It’s also important to make sure that the coins don’t collide and make a noise, which will reveal the secret of this trick.

Coin Trick 3: Mind Reading Money

When you leave the room or turn your back, someone from the audience hides a coin under a cup that’s placed in the center of the table. When you return to the room, you can guess the type of coin that has been hidden.

The Secret: Once a member of the audience has placed a coin in the middle of the table, your secret assistant places the cup over the coin. They use the handle of the cup to secretly inform you the value of the coin under it.

All you have to do is agree on a secret code. Each different handle position relates to a different value of coin. Just make sure that both of you are perfectly clear on the secret code that you’re using and can remember it without having to think about it.

The other advantage of this trick is that you can perform it anywhere in the world regardless of the currency.

From Your Mind to Their Mind

Mental magic tricks mostly involve staying one step ahead of your audience. With most magic tricks, scientific principles are used. However, mental magic tricks use more of a math foundation, specifically the laws of probability and statistics. When you understand how you can predict your audience’s response to certain questions, you will be able to master many mental magic tricks.

1) Pick a Card

You have heard magicians tell their audience: Pick a card, any card. Here is a unique twist. Have your audience member think of a card. You will be able to tell them the card by reading their mind. While this may sound like an impossibility mental magic tricks are done in a very possible way.

In this trick, the magician relies on the fact that most people will think of the Ace of Spades, the Queen of Hearts, the Six of Clubs or the Nine of Diamonds. Before facing your audience, pull these four cards out of the deck and put them in different pockets.

Be sure to remember which card went in what pocket. Your audience will be truly astounded when you pull their card out of your pocket. Mental magic tricks like this one are based on the probability of people choosing certain cards. With that said, this trick will also work most of the time.

2) Pick a Number

There are many mental magic tricks involving numbers. Try this one. Ask an audience member to pick a number between 50 and 100. The number must be even and have different digits. The usual answer will be 68. Once again, the idea is to be one thought ahead of your audience. Research indicates that 68 is the number most likely to be selected.

3) Pick Another Card

Fan out several cards before an audience member and ask them to select a card. The cards should be face cards with a Four of Hearts in the center. Most people will pick the Four of Hearts because it’s different and in the middle.

All of these mental magic tricks so far use math probabilities to succeed. Keep in mind that while they may work most of the time, they may not work all the time. In that case, be ready to improvise. Magicians understand that their own performance is the key to successful magic. If a trick should fail to proceed as planned, don’t let the audience know. Stay confident and in control at all times.

4) Bending a Coin

Mental magic tricks don ot always use probability. With this trick, the minds of the magician and the audience member appear to work together to get an unusual result.

Ask someone for a coin and then palm it in your hand. Have a bent coin ready in that same hand. Tell the person you will place the coin in their hand and together you will bend it. Slip the bent coin in their hand and close their fist around it. Tell the person to concentrate on the coin and when their hand opens, there is the proof!

The first thing you will want to establish with kids is that you know what you are talking about. It is you that is the expert. You should do a few simple tricks yourself ending with the one you plan on teaching them how to do.

Depending upon the age of the child or the children, choose a magic trick to teach them that it is possible for them to do considering their height and the size of their hands.

On the other hand, if you are not a magician, don’t pretend to be and just have some fun with some very simple tricks that you can do.

If you happen to be the parent (aunt, uncle, Godmother or Godfather, Grandmother or Grandfather) of a budding magician and he or she is begging and pleading for a magic kit, you can find some very good ones online (Illusionist is a good site) or at your local magic shop.

Learning magic tricks together with you child is great fun and a great way to spend time together. And once you get started… there’s a good chance that both you and your child will get hooked!

When buying a magic kit for a child, do not choose one that says it is for kids from 4 to 104.

There are an abundance of magic tricks and kits that are geared for the age of the child. Also, if your child has been executing magic tricks and shows a real interest… their skill level may be above the recommended age anyway.

With a one size fits all magic kit, the kids wont be able to do but about half of the tricks in the kit. Their hands wont be big enough.

Also, it’s a good idea to be certain that the instructions come with pictures or video.

Information about how to do the tricks in nothing but print are almost useless to children.

Once you find one that you like, you’ll and your kids will be well on the way to hours of fun… and who knows… maybe a budding magician.

The coin based tricks can be at times easier than those based on the cards as the individual should learn to handle the cards smartly. The shuffling of the cards in a desired manner to perform the trick is very essential. Sometimes the ‘magician’ has to manage the trick by working on 2 –3 cards while pretending to fiddle only with one card. But some cards can be modified specially of the magic tricks, like covering one half of the card with half of another card etc. Some of the famous magic tricks of the magic kits are Vanishing coin trick, Eggcup trick, and the Broken Pencil trick. In short, these magic kits contain items specially designed to do the ‘magic’ like the ball connected to the string which stops at one’s word and continues at ‘Go’. The trick is the string is designed such a way that the person saying ‘stop’ stretches the string tightly at that moment and the ball stops. On relaxing the grip, the ball continues to move down.



Disappearing Coin Trick

The same trick of making a coin ‘disappear’ as the audiences are witnessing it can be done in several ways. Suggested here is one such manner in which a glass, colored paper and handkerchief is used. The glass has to be pasted with the colored paper exactly matching the shade of the sheet over which the glass is placed upside down. The trick is to place a coin on the colored sheet and inform that the coin is going to disappear. After displaying the presence of the coin, cover it with the handkerchief. While pulling out the handkerchief, move the glass over the coin without anyone noticing it. And lo! The coin would have ‘disappeared’ under the magical kerchief.



Reading One’s Mind

This can be easy with prior preparation and careful steps to hide the actions from the onlookers. Use a clear tape to be wound around the thumb with the sticky part outside. A piece of lead can be carefully placed on the inner side of the thumb, stuck to the tape. Pretend to write on a paper initially while nothing is being written. Have two boxes filled with cards containing shapes in one and numbers in the other box. Ask one of the audience to pick one card from each, showing the onlookers the shape and the number they have selected. Surprise everyone by showing them the paper on which you had ‘written’ earlier which contains the shape and number chosen by the person. The trick is to jolt down the shape and the number on the paper with the lead as the person displays it to the audience but pretending to be watching them.

Optical Illusion is Magic

Magic is based on optical illusion because it involves the use of deceitful tricks that tends to help you perform the unnatural. Some of the most famous illusionists of time like Harry Houdini perform magic using a technique called Pepper’s Ghost.

In Pepper’s Ghost illusory technique, the use of glass fibers are perfectly positioned to create a hologram figure of the object you are trying to hide. Special effects and the use of black background are also critical to the performance of technique.

In the late 1800s, Harry Houdini first performed his major magic trick in front of a large audience by making an elephant disappear and making if appear again according to his own willing.

Since then, a lot of his contemporaries began making use of this type of strategy until it was patented in the late 1860.

Magic is a type of Illusion

You can hardly separate magic from optical illusion because the one is characteristic of the other. Magic involves the use of tricks that involve the quick hand and the use of colors and objects that seem to block the actual image of the main subject.

Specific productions (magic types) are achieved which shadows the image of the main object being given attention to.

For example, a glass of water that is apparently empty is actually lined with a clear material while the inside is stuff with material which you may show to your audience as a product of your magic (coins flowing from an empty bottle) when taken out.
